SS Thistlegorm: day trip or liveaboard?

A day trip gets you one dive on the Thistlegorm for a lower price and a smaller time commitment: one long day, one (sometimes two) dives on the wreck, arriving mid-morning with the rest of the day-boat fleet, no other sites included. A liveaboard gets you there earlier — often at first light, ahead of the crowds — usually gives you two or more dives on the wreck across a 7-night week, and combines it with Abu Nahas and Ras Mohammed on the same route, for a bigger price and a full week away.

The single biggest factor is timing. Day boats from Hurghada arrive at the Thistlegorm mid-morning, by which point several other boats are often already tied up. Liveaboards moored nearby overnight can be in the water at first light — calmer water, better visibility, noticeably less traffic. Most liveaboard itineraries that open with the Thistlegorm schedule two dives on it, rather than the single dive a day trip allows.

Not everyone has a week to give to diving, or the budget for a liveaboard on this visit. If you've got two or three days in Hurghada and want to see the Thistlegorm without committing to a full safari, the day trip is the honest answer. It's also the better fit if you're already experienced and just want this one specific wreck rather than a full route.

If the Thistlegorm is the whole reason for your trip and you've got the time, take the liveaboard — the early start and second dive genuinely change the experience. If it's one stop on a shorter holiday, the day trip does the job without the extra cost and commitment.
